Monta Jane Akin
About Our Namesake: Monta Jane Akin
Monta Jane Akin Elementary is proudly named after Monta Jane Akin, a beloved and influential leader in Leander ISD. A true pillar of the LISD community, Monta laid the foundation for many of the systems and values that continue to shape our district today. We are honored to carry forward her legacy.
Monta believed deeply in the power of student voice, and at Akin Elementary, we strive to uphold her vision by building strong relationships, embracing continuous improvement, and creating joy in learning every day.
Born in Houston on June 19, 1948, Monta began her career as a first-grade teacher in Austin ISD. In 1976, she joined LISD as a reading specialist, later serving as curriculum director and ultimately as assistant superintendent of instructional services. Her leadership was instrumental in establishing the districtās culture of continuous improvement and in developing the guiding documents that serve as the backbone of student learning in LISD.
Monta retired in December 2015 after more than 40 years of dedicated service. She and her husband of over 35 years, Jim Roberson, have lived in Leander for over two decades. Together, they have one daughter, Melissa (and her husband Pete), two grandsons, Alex and Cooper, and Montaās brother, Jess Akin. She is also the daughter of the late Mavis and Jess Akin.
Monta continues to visit our campus and is always inspired by how our studentsāour Aviatorsābring her words and values to life each day.
